Tanzania National Parks

Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti plains, the Ngorongoro crater are just part of the natural heritage of this unique safari destination.

Tanzania has twelve national parks and is home to 20% of Africa's large mammal population.
Bird species in certain areas number 550.

Safaris range from Gorilla trekking to a visit to the wild chimps at Gombe, climb Mount Kilimajaro, hiking and fishing or visit Ruaha the 2nd largest elephant sanctuary in Tanzania.

Arusha - close to the town of Arusha - special features of this park are Ngurdoto Crater, Momela Lake and Mount Meru. Spectacular views of Kilimanjaro - only 50 kms away.

Katavi - in the Mpanda district - features include the largest number of crocodiles in Tanzania, Lake katavi, Lake Chada and the Katuma river. during the dry season herds of up to 4000 elephants and 1000 off buffalo.

Lake Manyara -
125 kms west of Arusha - under the wall of the Great Rift valley - highlights include thousands of flamingoes, pelicans, cormorants and storks. Of special interest is Manyara's tree climbing lions. Other game includes buffalo, wildebeest and zebra.

Mikumi - close to Dar es Salaam - wide variety of wildlife - large herds of elephant and buffalo - black and white colobus monkeys - 400 bird species and a host of European migrants can be seen during the rainy season

Mkomazi - east of the Pare mountains - features include black rhino and wild dog - wide diversity of wildlife. Predators are numerous (silver backed jackal, lion, cheetah, leopard). Another feature is the long necked antelope - the Gerenuk.

Ruaha - 130 kms west of Iringa - a good network of game viewing roads follows the Great Ruaha and its tributaries. The park is also known for its Lesser and Greater Kudu, roan and sable antelope. Birdlife numbers some 450 species.

Rubondo - in the south west corner of lake Victoria - the major attraction of this island park is the sitatunga antelope. Other wildlife includes hippo, crocodiles, marsh mongoose, genets, pythons.

Saadani -
where Tanzania's tropical coastline meet East African bush. Its major feature is the green turtle breeding site on mainland Tanzania - one of the last major sites for the turtle. Giraffe, buffalo, warthog, waterbuck, reedbuck, wildebeest, red duier, eland, sable and elephant are just some of the varied wildlife.

Selous -
this reserve is the size of Switzerland and the largest in Africa - find large populatons of elephants. Wildlife commonly seen are lions, wild dogs, buffalo, bushbuck, impala, eland, zebra, kudu.

Serengeti -
one of Africa's greatest wildlife sanctuaries - where the ancient migration of wildebeest and zebra takes place every year - where traces of early man can be found in the Olduvai gorge - large proportion to predator to prey

Tarangire - 115 kms from Arusha town - easily accessed by car - tree climbing pythons and lions - bird checklist numbers 550 varieties - during the dry season Tarangire plays host to the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti

Uzdungwa
- in the Iringa and Morogoro regions (suth central Tanzania) - this mountain park offers hiking trails. Specific to the park are the 6 primate species as well as the Iringa red colobus and Sanje Crested Mangabey which occur nowhere else in the world.
