Sandy Coastline

Coastal Namibia

From Kunene river to Walvis Bay, Namibias coastline supports high concentrations of marine life making it a fishermans paradise.

Accommodation in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay varies from small guesthouses to hotels.

Inland of Swakopmund lies the Namib Naukluft park and the plains of the Namib.

Of interest too are the Erongo Mountains, southwest of Omaruru - a network of caves and rock containing a wealth of rock paintings.

Etosha National Park

Is one of Africa's great wildlife parks located in northern Namibia.

A huge mineral pan more than 22 000 sq kms in extent.

The flatness of Etosha allows for easy game viewing of more than 150 mammal species - including the endangered Black Rhino and rare species such as the Black Faced Impala.

There are a number of rest camps around Etosha as well as private safari lodges.

Okaukuejo, Halali and Namutoni are the best known with floodlit waterholes at Okaukuejo and Namutoni.

Valleys

Fish River Canyon

This 160 kms long massive gorge is regarded as the world's second largest canyon.

Located in southern Namibia - estimates show that it was formed approx.

500-million years ago.

The ravine reaches 27 kms wide and 550 metres deep in certain sections and forms part of the Richtersveld Transfrontier National Park.

Viewing points are well marked and offer awesome views of the canyon.

For the fit and adventurous there is a 54 mile hike in the canyon.

Bushman

Kalahari Desert

Also known as the Kgalagadi is a fossil desert.

A landscape of camelthorn, ebony and acacia trees, small red dunes and golden grasses.

The Kalahari is best known for its inhabitants - the San Bushmen, one of the world's oldest cultures and for its wildlife including brown hyenas, lions, meerkats, jackals, eland and many species of birds and reptiles.

Mountains

Namib Desert

In the southern region of Namibia, the Namib desert flanks the coastal belt with the Kalahari desert forming its eastern border.

This desert paradise is made up of hauntingly beautiful landscapes - carved by wind currents and sprays from the cold Atlantic ocean.

Sand dunes that "roar" - rocky canyons - untouched and remote regions with ancient fossil plants - this is the Namib

Mountains

Northern Namibia

The main tourist attraction in this area is the Etosha national park - a spectacular wildlife area home to over 100 mammal species, 300 bird species and some 16 species of reptiles and amphibians.

Accommodation ranges from luxury camps and renovated forts to safari lodges bordering Etosha.

Explore the Hoba Meteorite (20 kms west of Grootfontein) - a 50 ton mass of nickel and iron dating back some 100 to 300 million years.

Red Desert

Sesriem / Sossusvlei

The high dunes of Sossusvlei are a photographer's dream.

Shaped by multi directional winds, the dunes have up to 5 crests meeting at the highest point to give them their star shape.

These dunes are some of the highest in the world.

Another notable attraction in the Namib area is Sesriem Canyon - a narrow gorge of sedimentary rock about 1 km in length - and 30m (100 foot) deep.

In places the canyon is only 2 metres wide.

Gemsbok

Southern Namibia

This region is dominated by vast open areas of natural landscapes - with the famous Sossusvlei dunes, the hot Springs at Ais Ais, the Fish River Canyon and the Kalahari desert.

The region is not known for its wildlife but there are plenty activities to get involved in - hot air ballooning, 4 x 4 trails, hikes through the desert or canyons * horse riding trails.

In keeping with its landscapes lodges have been designed to blend in and be at one with their surroundings.
